SCW0512: Round Deadeye

SCW512 is the only circular deadeye found on the site, it was surrounded by concretion which was thought to contain iron strapping. Witsen (Hoving, 2012, p. 181) states that the dead eyes on the mainmast of a Dutch rig ship “are half in iron, half in rope” SCW512 could be one of the lower dead eyes from the mainmast of the wreck. However unlike the other deadeyes the grain runs across the block rather than longitudinally which is usually seen in much later wrecks, this suggests that SCW512 may be an intrusive find from a later date.
