Roman Legionnaires wielded advanced shields around the 40 or 50 Century AD. A cutting-edge convex rectangular shield constructed from wood, durable glue, and multiple layers of canvas and tough calf skin offered exceptional protection. Reinforced metal rims safeguarded the edges of the shield from cracking, while an Iron or bronze shield boss at its center delivered crushing defensive blows and effortlessly halted projectiles in their tracks. The scutum stood out as a standout feature, forming the primary defensive armament for Roman legionnaires.
