In 1936.01.0001, a remarkable wooden sculpture was discovered in Stockholm, Sweden. Originally one of five identical sculptural elements that formed the sides of a rectangular platform, this particular piece has been carefully preserved to this day. The other four elements are currently housed at the British Museum, where they remain an important part of their collection. Two boards that made up the base and seating area of the original platform, as depicted in a drawing by Lander & Lander in 1832, have since gone missing from the museum's inventory in 2017. However, our sculpture in Stockholm remains intact, featuring four soldiers in a striking display. According to the same illustration, this piece was likely one of two identical elements on the back side of the platform, with a similar design. Another element at the British Museum, bearing the inventory number Af.2709, showcases an identical soldier theme. The sides of the original platform were comprised of two matching elements (Af.2713 and Af.2708), which depicted two musicians in a lively scene. Meanwhile, the piece likely serving as the front of the platform (Af.2711) features a dignitary riding a horse or mule in regal splendor.
