Small statue crafted from metallic wire and fabric. Dolls created to honor Polish and Slovenian workers who migrated to the Netherlands around 1920 to work in mines. These foreign miners were seasoned veterans since they had worked in their countries' industries, and sought opportunities in the emerging Dutch mining sector. They brought a wealth of cultural influences, including Polish and Slovenian dance and music associations established later in the country. Traditional clothing worn by characters is from a musical ensemble (muziekgezelschap). On display at the Netherlands Mining Museum in Heerlen. Dimensions: 16cm tall, 9.5cm long, 6.3cm wide.
