Established during the reign of Emperor Alexander II, a pivotal period in Russian history was ushered in. As emperor, Alexander implemented a series of transformative reforms that earned him lasting recognition as Alexander the Liberator. His most notable achievement was the emancipation of Russia's serfs in 1861, a move that had far-reaching consequences for the country. In addition to this groundbreaking reform, Alexander tackled various other challenges, including overhauling the judicial system and introducing elected local judges to enhance accountability and fairness. He also took steps to abolish corporal punishment and promote local self-government through the zemstvo system, fostering greater autonomy and participation from citizens. Furthermore, Alexander imposed universal military service on all Russian males, ended some of the nobility's exclusive privileges, and actively promoted higher education at universities across the country.
