Ptolemy II Philadelphus ruled Ptolemaic Egypt from 283 BCE to 246 BCE. Born into the royal family, he was educated by Philitas of Cos and took over the kingdom after his father's death. His two half-brothers, Ptolemy Keraunos and Meleager, had become kings of Macedonia but were killed during the Gallic invasion of 280-279 BCE. Initially married to Arsinoe I, daughter of Lysimachus, Ptolemy later repudiated her and married his full sister Arsinoe II, who was also a widow of Lysimachus. During Ptolemy's reign, the Alexandrian court reached its peak in terms of cultural and literary achievements. He actively promoted the Museum and Library of Alexandria, which became renowned for its vast collection of knowledge. Additionally, Ptolemy commissioned a commemorative stele, known as the Great Mendes Stela, to honor his legacy. The Great Mendes Stela was exhibited at the 2017 London Masterpiece Fair, showcasing its historical significance to art enthusiasts and historians alike.
