S.C.R.U.-F.E.: Simple C++ Robot for Kids Everywhere! I'm developing this design to inspire educators and parents to teach programming in a fun and engaging way, without breaking the bank. The goal is to make coding accessible to elementary and middle school students, using affordable kits that are easy to assemble and maintain. This project started when my two-year-old daughter fell in love with an old ultrasonic robot I built 25 years ago. It's missing parts and no longer works, but she's treated it like a treasure since she was one year old. For her third birthday, I aimed to create a sub-$50 robot with easily replaceable parts (check out the B.O.M. in the instructions) that we could build together. The fact that each part costs less than $10 and can be sourced easily or found online gives me hope that Scruffy will be passed down to her children, filled with happy memories. My daughter adores this robot; she named him Scruffy, so I came up with a silly acronym that suits his quirky appearance.
