Ratchet is what a carpenter typically calls a manual device with a rotating handle and toothed bar, designed to tighten bolts or screws without the risk of over-tightening them. The tool was initially introduced in the mid-1800s by the Blackhawk Manufacturing Company. It wasn't until the early 1900s that screwdrivers with rotating handles were mass-produced by other companies such as Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation and Blackhawk's competitors. In some areas, however, these hand tools continue to be referred to as "corkscrews".
