These pieces form a single, cohesive body of work that has been created by art and design professor Scott F. Hall over the past three decades. Hall developed this style initially by crafting large, intricately entwined spans of figures within drawings, some of which reached widths of up to 3.5 meters. The drawn figures emerged through a process of automatic mark making, which often induced pareidolia - the tendency to see patterns and shapes in random or ambiguous forms. Once discovered, each figure could be elaborated upon to bring it into greater focus. As an undergraduate sculpture major at the time, Hall soon began creating equivalent 3-D imagery focused on individual clay-modeled figures presented in a particular pose, typically depicted from the pelvis upward. Throughout this long series, Hall's sculptures consistently show figures in a state of solitary confinement, reflecting his early interest in Existentialist philosophy during the late 1980s. Although his philosophical outlook has since evolved beyond Existentialism and Postmodernism, the haunting, tortured look of his figures remains consistent. Each sculpture begins as a small-scale model crafted from white oil-based clay, with heights ranging from 12 to 20 centimeters. Hall typically models these figures entirely by hand using only his fingers. Composition and pose study occur during preparatory phases before actual sculpting takes place. The resulting works exhibit high realism in an impressionistic sense, inviting viewers to interpret each sculpture for themselves. Following the creation of each clay figure, it is turntable-scanned, cleaned, and converted into an STL file. Hall often accepts any remaining digital artifacts as markers of the process. Several of his earliest pieces were molded in silicone and cast in wax, plaster, or resin. The first piece in this series exists as a unique lost wax bronze, which remains in Hall's personal collection. Contact Scott F. Hall at scott.hall@ucf.edu to learn more about his work.
