The Allies designated E-boat as the Western forces' term for the Kriegsmarine's speedy attack craft, known as Schnellboot or S-Boot in German, which translates to "fast boat." The most prominent class, the S-100, proved to be incredibly seaworthy, heavily armed, and exceptionally fast – capable of maintaining a blistering 43.5 knots (80.6 km/h; 50.1 mph) and briefly hitting an astonishing 48 knots (89 km/h; 55 mph).
