Museum Het Valkhof - Tombstone for Marcus Mallius Dating: 1-50 AD This Roman tombstone of limestone was discovered in 1938 by Herwen, during the excavation of a recreational lake. The stone comes from the first century and tells an interesting story. The deceased was named Marcus Mallius, a native of Genua, who served as a soldier with the First Legion. It is also mentioned that he was buried Carvio ad molem, 'in Carvium by the dam'. Carvium will be the name of the fort that existed in Herwen during Roman times, and the mentioned dam was an impressive water barrier at the junction of Rhine and Waal. General Drusus had this built to allow more water to flow into the Rhine. More information: www.schatkamersvangelderland.nl Museum Het Valkhof: www.museumhetvalkhof.nl
