The vibrant scarlet macaw (Ara macao) is a large and striking red, yellow, and blue parrot native to the lush humid evergreen forests of tropical Central and South America. It is a member of a large group of Neotropical parrots known as macaws, with its range stretching from south-eastern Mexico to the Peruvian Amazon in Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Brazil. The scarlet macaw thrives in lowlands between 500 m (1,640 ft) and 1,000 m (3,281 ft), but in some areas it has faced local extinction due to habitat destruction or capture for the parrot trade. However, it remains fairly common in other regions. Historically, its range extended north to southern Tamaulipas, and today it can still be found on the island of Coiba. As the national bird of Honduras, the scarlet macaw is a prized species among aviculturists due to its stunning plumage.
