As a Design teacher, it's essential that you follow the three "ing" disciplines: Camping, Fishing, and Partying. To get started: Make plastics using print files attached: The plastic used is ABS and has been polished with acetone vapors. A housing has been included for a 15x6x5mm bearing on both sides. Work with timber from recycled floorboards in a scrap yard: The timber was laser cut (files are still being uploaded, but it can be easily cut with traditional tools). Timber finished with wattyl 7008 2-pack high-gloss estipol, which is super water-resistant, but any estipol will do. Join plastic and timber using a 2-pack adhesive and hand sand (don't forget to put the bearing in before gluing the timber cap over it). Use stainless steel by making a mold for the reel seat: Press scrap steel into the mold using a 6-ton press. Bend the arm from scrap steel on a pan brake and spot weld it to the reel seat. Tap the arm with an M6x1 tap to allow for double bolting the middle pin, enabling the reel to spin freely. Attach handles by gluing them in place with 2-pack adhesive: This allows the handle to spin freely. Objectives: Design and print students will use a variety of skills, including: Working with stainless steel Turning Thread cutting Spot welding Metal forming Mixed media design Engraving Timber finishing Audience: This project is suitable for stage 5 level (15-16 years) and can be incorporated in Engineering, Metals, and Design classes. It requires competent students due to the variety of skills involved. Adjustments can be made by pre-producing components. Preparation: All required skills have been developed over the previous 2-3 years of students' schooling. Some components can be pre-produced to reduce design complexity. Results: Students should be able to design and produce their own version of this design, which may include variations in size or features such as engraving or a side casting mechanism like an Alvey reel. They will be marked on the quality of finish and skills incorporated into their design.
