Scarab beetles became prominent symbols and talismans in ancient Egypt, dominating a vast body of art from that era. Most likely inspired by the god Khepri, these scarabs signify the rising sun and its corresponding creation and rebirth of life. Scarab beetle amulets gained immense popularity during the early Middle Kingdom (approximately 2000 BC) and maintained their status for the remainder of the pharaonic period and beyond. Throughout this extended period, the function of scarabs underwent numerous transformations. Initially used as protective talismans, they were also engraved with inscriptions for use as personal or administrative seals, and sometimes incorporated into jewelry pieces.
