Scarab Beetle Box (with secret lock)
thingiverse
Here is the original text. The scarab beetle is a small model with a secret compartment that can be accessed by pulling back a "drawer" and opening up its wing case. The box is locked by closing the wing case and pushing the drawer back into place. A clever idea came from sherpa_chris, another Thingiverse user, who found a way to fix the "head jewel" so it can be used as a button to open the wing case, providing the drawer is pulled back, which definitely enhances the model in my opinion. You can see his modification here: http://www.thingiverse.com/make:101797. This model is styled after the "Egyptian Revival" style of the 19th and early 20th centuries rather than Ancient Egypt. For more information, visit this excellent page http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/erev/hd_erev.htm. It's definitely worth researching this style as it is beautiful and striking. To the ancient Egyptians, the scarab beetle was symbolic of the sun (Ra) moving across the sky every day; they saw the beetle rolling a ball of dung to represent this motion. My model features a stylized beetle with winged Ra positioned between its two front feet. The model consists of 12 separate parts that must be fitted together. All pieces print without support, which is convenient for the hobbyist printer user. The model also features my design logo at its bottom. UPDATE: I've uploaded a third version of the drawer file after it was noted that it had a tendency to fall open, but the second version was too large. The new file is called drawer_v3.stl and has a height of 12.45mm; however, the fitting for it in middle_part.stl file measures 12.5mm. This may require some minor sanding. I'd like to thank MacGyver for pointing out the original issue and Botmaster for alerting me to the second problem.
