Scarab Beetle Box (with secret lock)
youmagine
The scarab beetle is a compact model with an hidden compartment, accessed by pulling back a sliding panel and opening up its wing case. You access the compartment by pulling back a drawer and lifting up the beetle's wing case. The box remains locked when you close the wing case and push the drawer back into place. This model draws inspiration from the Egyptian Revival style of the 19th and early 20th centuries rather than Ancient Egypt itself. To learn more about this beautiful style, visit this excellent page: http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/erev/hd_erev.htm. Researching this style is definitely worth your time as it's both striking and stunning. In ancient Egyptian culture, the scarab beetle was a symbol of the sun (Ra) moving across the sky every day, with the beetle rolling a ball of dung representing this process. My model features a stylized beetle standing on two front feet with a winged Ra between them. The model consists of 12 individual parts that must be assembled together. Find the assembly instructions here: http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Scarab-Beetle-Box-Assembly-Instructions/. UPDATE: I have uploaded a new version of the drawer file after some users noted that the original drawer was too loose and tended to fall open. The updated file has less tolerance, and testing shows it stays in place.
