Scangauge II Face and 4th gen 4runner mount

thingiverse

My first Thingiverse submission, which is very much still a work in progress. This is a mount I am trying to make for my Scangauge II in my Toyota 4runner. It occupies one of the switch plates to the left of the steering wheel in LHD, 4th gen 4runners. The location it occupies is usually used by the Dash light dimmer switch or seat position memory buttons. To that end, I started with fmotta's Toyota Blank Dash Plate, which fits those switch positions perfectly. I cut off one corner somewhat sloppily to allow the Scangauge cable to pass through the hole at the same time. I also cut a spacer from the modified dash plate's model that can be adjusted to your preference. I originally designed an arm that supported the Scangauge from behind, but didn't really like the position. I decided instead of trying to modify angles of the mount, I would design a replacement faceplate for the Scangauge. It's not perfect, but it does accept the original screws and the button/RJ45 holes line up perfectly. I had a lot of difficulty getting the face to print in a way that I like it. I may take a shot at abandoning the original screws and converting it to M3 hardware, which I think might let me simplify printing the mount as an assembly as well. My best attempt to print this part was face down, where the chamfers/fillets didn't do too well. Files included: * cutmount.stl: Modified Blank Dash Plate. Print with face vertically for best results. Printing face down makes the prongs very fragile. * cutspacer.stl: Spacer to match the profile of the modified mount. Adjust the height to your preference. * face3.stl: My current version of the Scangauge II replacement face. This is the first revision I could use where the screws didn't destroy the face. Print at 100% infill, and fasten the screws slowly. * arm.stl: Basic profile of the mount arm. Attach it to the face, and you get the next file. * facemount2: Arm and face attached. * longer pins.stl: Pins to fasten the mount, spacer, and arm together. You may have to adjust their length if you've made the spacer thicker. * mountallenconversionv3: A face/mount with a set of pins that works with the original switch plate but integrates a 5mm spacer, uses M3 hardware to secure everything including the faceplate, and several rounded edges. This is likely not the last revision, but is the first one I'm really satisfied with. If you make one, just be careful not to overtighten the screws you use for the faceplate. v9 is now included, which may be the final design of this part. With the issues I've had printing ABS, I've instead had this file printed by Shapeways in vinyl. Along with the v9 file, you will also need the longer pins and the cut mount. Pictures of the end result coming soon. If you find success with any of these models please let me know, or if you have suggestions for improving its quality.
