SCALP EG is a stealthy Anglo-French air-launched cruise missile that operates at high altitudes and distances. The French military calls it SCALP EG (Systeme de Croisiere Autonome a Longue Portee - Emploi General), which translates to General Purpose Long Range Cruise Missile. In the UK, this same weapon is known as Storm Shadow. Weighing in with a range of approximately 560 kilometers, this missile is propelled by a high-speed turbojet engine that reaches speeds of Mach 0.8. SCALP EG is designed for use as a fire-and-forget system, programmed before launch to strike its target with precision. This missile operates on a path that is both semi-autonomous and stealthy, using GPS guidance and terrain mapping to navigate towards the target area. As it nears its destination, the missile climbs steeply before diving sharply into its target. During this descent phase, the nose cone of the missile jettisons itself, allowing a high-resolution thermographic camera (infrared homing system) to capture detailed images of the target area.
