Dragons are massive, serpent-like legendary creatures that feature prominently in the folklore of cultures across the globe. Despite vastly differing beliefs about dragons in various regions, a common trait in western societies since the High Middle Ages has been their depiction as winged, horned, four-legged beings with the capacity to breathe fire. By contrast, eastern cultures generally portray dragons as wingless, four-legged serpentine creatures possessing exceptional intelligence. The earliest recorded dragon descriptions reveal them to be gargantuan snakes. Ancient mythologies in the Near East were the first to feature dragon-like creatures, which appeared extensively in Mesopotamian art and literature. The act of storm-gods slaying enormous serpents is a recurring theme throughout nearly all Indo-European and Near Eastern mythological tales.
