Scaled-down Sunflower Clock
prusaprinters
I wanted to print the Sunflower clock by Romano Ruggeri . But my Ender 3 Pro printer bed is too small for the petals.I scaled it down to 85% to fit each petal diagonally on the bed.Additionally, I decided to use a “silent” sweep mechanism that I already had available. This needed a few mods to the clock body to make it fit.The total width of my remixed clock is about 60cm.Clock mechanism : “LEZ” “silent” sweep type. (from eBay). Thread length: 15mm. Total shaft length: 21mm. Shaft diameter: 7.5mm. The shaft is made for a 5.5mm dia. hour and 3.6mm dia. minute hand. It is not a high torque type like the one in the original design, so I had to add a few layers thickness to the round minute hand counter-balance to help reduce the load on the mech. Clock bodyI used black PLA. (Supports are needed for the wall hanger section). The petal slots are easily damaged, I removed any stringing or blobs in them to ensure they are clear before fitting petals.Petals I used Eryone silk copper and silk gold PLA. My first attempt failed to make the petals strong enough. For my second attempt I used the following settings in Cura 5.1.0Profile: Standard 0.2mm (modified)Layer height: 0.2mm (default) Line Width: 0.6mm (increased from the default 0.4mm to improve stiffness)Top Layers: 0Bottom Layers: 0Printing Temperature: 220 (to improve layer adhesion and silkiness for this silk filament)Z seam alignment: Sharpest corner To hide layer changesSpiralize outer contour: To make it print as a single wall spiral.Hands & Hour markersI used marble effect Sunlu PLA for these.Petal LinksI used Sunlu clear PETG. I added a small tab on each petal to mark where the centre of a link should fit. This should make it look better if all links are spaced apart precisely. (cut off the tab excess plastic before fitting a clip.)Fitting PetalsMake sure the petals will slide-into the body without force as the slots can snap or petals become damaged. The bottom edge of each petal could be carefully chamfered slightly with a knife or file just where it first goes into the slot to help it fit smoothly.Face RingThis is an optional decorative ring made with Silk gold PLA that can be glued to the clock body with impact adhesive. ConclusionThis clock looks great on the wall. I don't know if my “silent” clock mech will last with the heavier hands and I still did not get the petals precisely aligned but it is more of a wall art piece than a clock. Thanks to Romano Ruggeri for his great design based on the original 1950s design by George Nelson.
