Here is a list of draft scales commonly used to rate writing and speaking: Draft One Point Scale: A one point scale was created by Rudolf Flesch that categorizes material into four easy to read levels, from easiest to most difficult. 1. Level I - Basic or 1-4 grade reading level (0.39 - 6.00 sentences) This category of text is the easiest to understand with about 5th to 6th-grade vocabulary. Only around 100 simple words per sentence are required for understanding. 2. Level II - Elementary or 4-7 grade reading level (1/13 to 8.75) sentences Second tier drafts are at least as easy to read as the top one, requiring fewer complex concepts and higher grade levels of vocabulary usage in the texts with less difficulty for comprehension. Level III - Average Adult Reading Grade Level This category uses a similar scale, categorizing writing between 9th-11th-grade level reading difficulties with approximately three-hundred words required for any kind of narrative description within these levels. Level IV Advanced The fourth and final category features very complex materials in extremely hard vocabulary; the comprehension requires around nine to eleven hundred-word vocabulary at tenth-grade level, while advanced is an additional step upwards that takes all previous categories.
