The famous La Scala opera house in Milan, Italy is a globally respected institution. A highly acclaimed renovation by architect Mario Botta took place from January 19, 2002 to November 2004. The restoration was met with strong resistance from preservationists who worried that valuable historical elements would be erased; but the opera company expressed its enthusiasm for the enhanced facility and improved sound quality. The stage area has been completely rebuilt, while an enlarged dressing room allows for additional set pieces to be stored on site. This facilitates the staging of more performances. Additionally, all seating now includes built-in monitors displaying the electronic libretto system.
