Human: A small dishware called a saucer has many purposes. Historically, during the Middle Ages, people used saucers for serving condiments and sauces. Today, however, we primarily use them as small plates that hold cups - usually the kind used for drinking coffee or tea (check out teacup). Often in the center of these dishes is a slight indentation made to match a cup; it can be elevated in some designs and antique models frequently do away with it entirely. Serving saucers serve two important functions: they shield surfaces from potential heat damage caused by hot cups, preventing water spills or overflows, as well as table linens from being ruined. For the user sitting in an open chair who holds both cup and serving dish, these features are especially crucial for protection. Some people carefully transfer the drink into the saucer to cool down the beverage more rapidly; exposing a larger area of the liquid increases heat dissipation so that you can drink the liquid sooner after it's been prepared. Even though they're typically part of formal table settings, uniquely styled cups are sold with matching serving dishes sometimes by themselves or as a part of a teapot and tiny dessert plates in sets. Most tea collections consist of four components.
