Saturn Abducting Cybele at The Louvre, Paris

This sculpture group is one of four scenes depicting abduction, reminiscent of 'Boreas Abducting Orithya' by the Marsy brothers. It was designed in 1674 as a commission for Louis XIV by painter Charles Le Brun to decorate the ponds of Versailles Park. Two large groups represent the four elements, with this one featuring Earth, placed alongside other sets depicting The Elements, The Continents, The Temperaments of Man, The Hours of Day, The Poems, and The Seasons. This sculpture showcases Earth as Goddess Cybele, accompanied by her lion, being abducted by Saturn (or Chronos) to form the twelve gods of Olympus. French sculptor Thomas Regnaudin created it between 1675-1687 and placed it in the Orangerie within Versailles Palace gardens before moving it to the Tuileries Garden circular basin. Restored from 2004-2006, it's now on permanent display at The Louvre's French sculpture room.
