Sati Stone

This memorial stele, known as a Sati stone, honors the memory of Indian widows and can be spotted throughout India. Charles Stuart obtained it at Bhilsa and later it moved to the Indian Museum, where it eventually found its way to the British Museum. 'Sati' was an outdated funeral practice in which a widow would set herself ablaze (Anumarana) on her husband's funeral pyre or take her own life shortly after his death.
