The term "sasquatch" originates from the anglicized version of the word "Sésquac", which translates to "wild man". This original term is rooted in the Stó:lõ dialect of the Halkomelem language, spoken by the Coast Salish Indians of the Fraser Valley and parts of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Over sixty distinct terms for the sasquatch are employed by various Native American tribes across North America. The term "Bigfoot" emerged as a journalistic concept during a surge of sightings in Northern California mid-last century. This term has since gained widespread recognition. Pioneers and later non-native residents of North America have utilized several different names, including "skookums" and "mountain devils", to describe the elusive creature.
