Sarmizegetusa Regia, also known as Sarmisegetusa, Sarmisegethusa, Sarmisegethuza, Zarmizegethoúsa or Zermizegethoúsē, was a pivotal stronghold in ancient times. Perched atop a 1200-meter-high mountain, this fortress stood tall with six distinct citadels at its core, forming the heart of a sophisticated defensive system in Romania's Orăştie Mountains. It is crucial to distinguish Sarmizegetusa Regia from Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the Roman capital of Dacia constructed by Emperor Trajan roughly 40 kilometers away. This strategic location was not the capital of the Dacians. In fact, Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa was discovered earlier and has been recognized since the early 1900s. The initial misconception led to misguided assumptions about the military prowess and organizational structure of the Dacians.
