Ariadne was the eternal companion of Dionysos, god of wine. Several accounts of her story exist. In one, Ariadne, daughter of King Minos on Krete (Crete), aided Theseus in his mission to slay the monstrous Minotaur and then fled with him aboard his ship. When they arrived on Naxos island, Theseus abandoned Ariadne as she slept, unaware that Dionysos had discovered her and made her his wife. Some claim she was later killed by Artemis or ascended to Olympos with her husband as an immortal. According to others, Ariadne married Dionysos many generations earlier when the god was still spreading his cult across the earth. During his conflict against the Argives with a band of sea-women, Ariadne was slain or turned into stone by King Perseus. The god descended into the underworld to rescue her and brought her back to Olympos.
