Hippolytus was son of Theseus, king of Athens, and the Amazonian warrior Hippolyte. Phaedra, wife of Theseus, fell deeply in love with Hippolytus. When her passion for him became apparent, he reacted with such disgust that she took her own life, leaving behind a note accusing Hippolytus of attempting to ravish her. Theseus refused to believe Hippolytus' fervent protests of innocence and banished him from the kingdom, invoking one of three curses given to him by Poseidon.
