Sarcofago di Gorgonio
sketchfab
The Sarcofago di Gorgonio, dating back to the 4th century AD and belonging to the paleo-Christian culture, is located in Room Number 2. It measures 80 cm tall, 112 cm deep, and 237 cm long. On its western front, the scene of 'Traditio legis' is depicted, where Christ hands over the law to Peter. The background features an architectural setting with six city gates, three on the right and three on the left of the central niche. At the center, Christ stands on a rock, extending his left hand to offer the scroll of law to Peter. Paolo and eight other apostles attend the ceremony, four on each side, all dressed in tunics and palliums, wearing sandals. Two figures, reduced in size, kneel at the foot of the rock in adoration: Gorgonio, dressed in military attire, is to the left, and his veiled wife is to the right. On the left side, three tripartite scenes are depicted on the background of the city gates.
