Sappho was an archaic Greek poet who hails from Lesbos around 630-570 BC. Her poetry primarily falls under lyric poetry and focuses on love themes. Most of Sappho's poems have vanished over time, but some fragments remain intact. Besides lyric poetry, three epigrams attributed to Sappho still exist today, however these are Hellenistic imitations rather than actual works by the poet herself. Sappho's personal life is somewhat of a mystery. Born into a wealthy family on Lesbos, her parents' names remain unknown. According to ancient sources, she had three brothers with two of their names mentioned in the Brothers Poem discovered in 2014. Sappho was banished to Sicily around 600 BC and may have continued writing until approximately 570 BC. Throughout antiquity, Sappho's poetry gained widespread recognition and admiration. She is often regarded as one of the nine lyric poets in the canon. Even today, her works are still highly regarded for their extraordinary nature and continue to influence other writers up to modern times. Outside academic circles, Sappho is commonly known as a symbol representing same-sex desire, particularly between women.
