I'm having trouble understanding what Christmas tree means to people today, a reminder of happier times past perhaps or an essential element in our present celebrations. We deck them out in lights and ornaments every year for our own satisfaction and sometimes it feels as if they have become an indispensable part of the festive season's rhythm and beat. They stand so proudly in living rooms and front porches throughout November and December, welcoming people in with open arms to enjoy a few minutes or hours inside the warmth and comfort of home during these colder winter months when we usually wish for sunshine rather than darkness and frost. But let's face it, what about the Christmas trees after Christmas has passed? Many will be carted off and tossed into dumpsters but some find a second chance at life when given away free on neighborhood streets so others can put them in their homes. This recycling is quite the sustainable way to keep giving during the holiday season while making an impact.
