This sculpture showcases Sappho surrounded by Cupid and lyre, capturing her essence as a renowned lyric poet from ancient Greece. Sappho's influence extended far beyond Lesbos, earning her widespread recognition and praise from notable figures such as Solon and Plato. A miniature plaster model of this work was commissioned by the City of Paris and displayed at the 1876 Salon, while its marble counterpart made its debut at the 1878 Paris Exhibition. This sculpture is a replica of the original marble piece on display at the Musée d'Orsay, located in front of Marpent's town hall.
