Santubong Seamount was discovered in a Malaysian maritime zone during a high-resolution bathymetry survey that took place from July 2 to December 3, 2013, using a multibeam echo sounder. The name Santubong was chosen due to its similarity to the highest mountain peak in Sarawak. According to the Encyclopedia of Iban Studies, the original inhabitants of Santubong were Ibans, also known as sea Dyaks. Derived from the phrase "Si-antubong," which translates to "spirit boat" in the Iban language, the word Antu means "hantu" or spirit in Malay. Santubongs are boat-like coffins crafted from a single hollow log, representing the vessel that transports the deceased from this world to the afterlife. The name Santubong may also originate from the Hakka Chinese dialect phrase "san choo bong," meaning wild pig king or king of wild boars. Historically, Santubong served as an important port in the area.
