Mike Rigsby, an electrical engineer, teamed up with his wife Annelle to create a stunning techno/art installation. Together, they put in over 2000 hours of work to bring this display to life. A total of ten Arduino microcontrollers and dozens of motors were combined with hundreds of three-dimensionally printed parts to make it possible. The link below showcases the project: https://youtu.be/TpNaaJuHE2M Included are three-dimensional files for Elmer, a charming elf character. For more construction details, visit: http://www.instructables.com/id/Elmer-Elf-Christmas-Display-2016/ As authors, Mike and Annelle created this project to share with the community. Using clay, Annelle crafted models of Elf heads (and Santa), smaller elves, dozens of animals riding a Ferris wheel, and other components. These clay models were then three-dimensionally scanned, resized (or adapted to fit motor shafts), and printed. Annelle painted the figures and designed their clothing. Servo motors controlled by Arduino microcontrollers allowed the characters to act out in a predetermined manner. The "story" acted by the characters lasts about three minutes and is repeated daily. Santa's Shop will be on display this December, operating from 5 P.M. to 9 P.M. at Brightway Insurance Agency; 9127 SW 52nd Ave, Gainesville FL 32608 For more detailed instructions on many of the items in the display, visit: https://hackaday.io/project/11397-santas-shop The general story behind this creation can be found at: http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Story-Santas-Shop-2016/ I Designed This The head for Elmer was designed using Sculpey clay, then scanned with a MakerBot Digitizer. The head was modified in size and a hole was formed inside to fit the servo motor bracket (attached using Velcro). This process took around 25 hours of print time, so be patient. More details on servo motors and mounting hardware can be found at: http://www.instructables.com/id/Elmer-Elf-Christmas-Display-2016/ I printed this on a MakerBot Replicator2 at the "Low" setting.
