Among the saints born in America, Santa Rosa de Lima was the first to receive official recognition from the Catholic Church. She earned the title of esteemed patron for Lima, Peru (in 1669), the New World and the Philippines (in 1670). Furthermore, she is revered as the patron saint of educational institutions, police forces, and military academies in Venezuela, the National Police of Peru, the Paraguayan National Police, and the Argentine Armed Forces. Due to her illness that led to her passing, Santa Rosa de Lima has become the patron saint of tuberculosis sufferers.
