In May 2016, a four-meter-tall statue of King Charles IV stood proudly on the Mill Colonnade in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Every year since then, locals have come together to craft a massive sand sculpture marking the beginning of spa season in town. This year's temporary masterpiece commemorates the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia's founding with a stunning tribute to Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the country's first president, riding his favorite horse Hektor. The lower section of the sculpture showcases the Prague skyline and essential symbols of Czechoslovakia: a map of the republic, its flag, key agreements, and the badge of the Czechoslovak Legion. By carefully building with wet sand, creating a strong foundation, and adding intricate details, artists ensure their fragile creations survive for several months. Once completed, the sculpture is waterproofed to withstand harsh weather conditions and stay intact until it's eventually washed away by nature.
