San Gennaro Catacomb Fresco, Napoli (27)
sketchfab
The intricately designed arcosolium for at least two entombments is situated within a passageway on the upper level of the Catacombs of San Gennaro in Naples. The catacombs themselves served as burial grounds from the 2nd century AD to the medieval period. Murals in the catacombs are in a state of poor preservation: A crimson border system separates the surface into geometric patterns, upon which various objects are placed such as dolphins, containers, and at the center of the niche a bust (?), while on the rear wall a horse is depicted. The result of a collaborative project involving GDH, the Zamani Project, Università degli Studi di Napoli “L’Orientale”, and the Administration of the Catacombe di Napoli was processed from 255 photographs. Reality Capture technology was employed to process the images. Descriptions were provided by Senior Professor Dr. Dieter Korol of Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster.
