San Gennaro Catacomb Fresco, Naples (23A)
sketchfab
The niche (arcosolium) behind one grave holds three burials in a hypogeum - an underground tomb of greater size - located on the upper level of the catacombs. The niche dates to the 3rd century AD, making it part of the oldest section of that level. Catacomb use for burial spanned from the 2nd century AD to the Middle Ages. Paintings feature a red frame system dividing the surface into geometric patterns, which once held various objects now lost. Based on preserved niches, objects such as birds, flowers, and vessels can be assumed. In front, an orange frame relic remains. Processed from 280 photos and three laser scans, this result comes from a joint project between GDH, the Zamani Project, Università degli Studi di Napoli “L’Orientale”, and the Catacombe di Napoli administration. Reality Capture processed this data. Descriptions were provided by Seniorprofessor Dr. Dieter Korol of Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. This is project # Fresco 23a.
