The extinct stratovolcano north of Flagstaff, Arizona serves as a unique 3D printing subject using free USGS topographical data. Matt Mechtley, with assistance from Sean Ragan, transformed the height field into printable form. Mechtley is also working on a tutorial for converting USGS topo data into printable terrain maps. After slicing the .stl file with skeinforge and other software, printing can begin. However, some issues may arise such as excessive movement of the print head without extrusion or platform displacement. Investigating these problems is essential for successful 3D prints.
