The San Francisco Peaks stand tall as a volcanic mountain range in north central Arizona, just north of Flagstaff, where they remain a remnant of the former San Francisco Mountain. Humphreys Peak, the highest summit in the range, proudly claims the title of the highest point in Arizona at 12,633 feet (3,851 m) above sea level. Formed from an eroded stratovolcano, the San Francisco Peaks now stand as a testament to geological history. An underground aquifer within the caldera supplies most of Flagstaff's water needs, while the mountain itself is nestled within the Coconino National Forest, a highly sought-after recreation destination. The Arizona Snowbowl ski area sprawls across the western slopes of Humphreys Peak, sparking intense controversy among several tribes and environmental groups over the years.
