San Diego ranks as one of California's most important cities. Situated in San Diego County on the Pacific Ocean in Southern California, approximately 120 miles south of Los Angeles and adjacent to Mexico's border. It is estimated that the population stands at 1,394,928 as of July 1, 2015. This makes San Diego the eighth-largest city in the United States and second-largest in California. San Diego is known for its mild climate throughout the year, its deep-water harbor, long stretches of beaches, historical ties to the United States Navy, and recent developments in healthcare and biotechnology research. The city has been visited by European explorers from an early stage, being the first destination in what is now the West Coast of the United States upon landing in 1542 by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. Cabrillo's visit marked a turning point as he claimed this area for Spain. The subsequent founding of Alta California took place nearly two centuries later in 1769. This year saw the establishment of both the Presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcalá, laying down the foundations for European settlement. By 1821, Mexico's sovereignty over the area took hold with it reorganizing into a new Mexican republic in 1823. As tensions rose during the Mexican-American War between the United States and Mexico in the mid-19th century, California joined forces with America following its incorporation in 1850. The county seat of San Diego sits firmly as the regional center for trade, manufacturing and the bustling cityscape adjacent to Mexico. Research-driven development through universities like the University of California, San Diego and the affiliated medical facility have greatly increased biotech endeavors, boosting San Diego into prominence.
