Abbey of San Benedetto in Polirone, a monastery founded by Tedalt, Count of Canossa in 1007, is a standout example of Romanesque architecture. By 1077, the community had transitioned to the reformed Benedictines under the Abbey of Cluny's guidance. One of the few surviving Romanesque structures from around 1100 AD is the portal of the months at this abbey. The original romanesque structure consists of two interconnected buildings: a large church dedicated to Simeone and a smaller church, St. Maria, heavily influenced by Cluny's oratory dedicated to the Virgin in 1085. The main church bears a striking resemblance to Cluny III, featuring columns and central pillars that separate the monastic choir from the space reserved for laypeople.
