The samurai's pride is embodied in the standard-sized Japanese sword, defined as the moderately curved katana, featuring a blade length of over 60.6 cm, equivalent to two shaku. Distinctive in appearance, the katana boasts a curved and slender single-edged blade paired with a circular or squared guard and an extended grip, accommodating both hands for ultimate control. Katana can typically be differentiated from its precursor, the tachi, by the placement of the signature or mei on the tang's nakago. On closer inspection, historians have discovered that most katana feature signatures carved into the side of the nakago that would face outward when worn, in direct opposition to tachis which are designed with the cutting edge downward and therefore exhibit mei placement opposite from the katana. With such distinction, even Western historians can agree: the katana was among the most lethal and highly prized combat knives throughout world history, a true testament to Japanese swordsmithing excellence.
