Sashimono, or small battle banners, were worn by soldiers in feudal Japan for identification purposes during battles. Attached to the back of chest armor via special fittings, these banners were used by both foot soldiers and samurai, as well as some cavalry riders whose horses had holders for the flags. Featuring clan symbols, they gained prominence during the Sengoku period, a time of civil war in Japan lasting from the mid-15th to early 17th century.
