This sculpture honors three of Romania's most iconic theologians, philosophers, and writers. Samuil Micu Klein (September 1745 – May 13, 1806) was a Romanian Greek-Catholic theologian, historian, philologist, and philosopher who contributed to the Enlightenment-era movement of Transylvanian School. Gheorghe Sincai (February 28, 1754 – November 2, 1816) was an ethnic Romanian Transylvanian historian, philologist, translator, poet, and representative of the Enlightenment-influenced Transylvanian School. As director of Greek Catholic education in Transylvania, he made a significant contribution to promoting culture in rural environments. Along with Samuil Micu, he composed the first written grammar of the Romanian language: Elementa linguae daco-romanae sive valachicae (The elements of the Daco-Roman or Wallachian language) (Vienna, 1780), demonstrating the Latin origins of the Romanian language. Petru Maior (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈpetru ˈmajor]; born in Marosvasarhely, now Targu Mures, Romania – February 14, 1821, in Budapest) was a Romanian writer and one of the most influential personalities of the Age of Enlightenment in Transylvania. Maior was a member of the Greek-Catholic clergy, historian, philosopher, and linguist. The Buda Lexicon, published in 1825, featured two texts by Petru Maior: Orthographia romana sive latino-valachica una cum clavi and Dialogu pentru inceputul linbei romane, introducing letters such as the "ș" for /ʃ/ and "ț" for /ts/, which are now part of the Romanian alphabet.
