Samuel Hayden was born into the illustrious Hayden family and was an extremely gifted intellectual and philanthropist from a very young age. After he took on the role of General Director of the Global Science Council, the Union Aerospace Corporation recruited him on board. With Argent energy being discovered on Mars soon after his appointment, Hayden subsequently became the leader of the UAC.Soon after the construction of the Argent Tower in 2127, Hayden was diagnosed with a brain cancer that was considered to be incurable and had given him just a few months left to live. But instead of accepting his fate, Hayden opted to transfer parts of his brain into a massive mechanical body standing at three meters tall, thus allowing him to prolong his life indefinitely. It's been implied that he chose this form so as to carry out his expeditions into the depths of Hell himself.Hayden led the very first manned expedition into the very gates of Hell in 2145 during which he stumbled upon a young protagonist who was simply referred to as the 'Doom Marine'. He saw fit to bring the Marine back and keep him under his close supervision, keeping him far away from Olivia Pierce who had grown disgruntled with Hayden. As Hayden's relationship with Pierce began to deteriorate, she fell prey to her twisted obsession with Hell, slowly but surely being corrupted by its power.After Olivia ultimately betrayed Hayden and conspired to unleash the gates of Hell on Earth, Hayden woke up the Doom Marine and set about convincing him that he was still in need of his assistance to stop Pierce's nefarious plans from coming to fruition. But instead of yielding to Hayden's request, the Doom Marine coldly rebuffed him twice at the beginning of the game, but it appears as though Hayden is prepared to bear full responsibility for Hell's invasion.Hayden plays an integral role throughout the course of the entire game. And although he eventually decides to betray the very person who had put their trust in him by stealing a valuable 'crucible' artifact from them with which they could unlock new dimensions of Hell, Hayden chooses to continue using it for humanity's benefit despite his misgivings that such actions will likely bring forth immense and unimagined suffering to an unspecified degree.
