Samsung Gear VR Fan Cover

WIP - Seems as the tabs are not lining up for anyone - I will fix as soon as I can\nI love my Samsung VR! However, I find my phone gets very warm.\nThis cover uses the same power from the phone's charger to run a fan and also charge the phone while in the VR.\nIt does need assembly, using parts you will have to buy unless you have them around like I had (80mm brushless fan).\n*The USB spitter can be purchased here\nThe nice thing about this USB splitter? Its intended use is to charge a bluetooth headset while PC and phone are transferring data. This makes it easy to re-purpose as a way to power the fan while charging the Galaxy. (The phone can communicate through the cable and recognize it's connected to a Fast Charger.)\nPost-Printing\n\n Fresh off the press! My bowden-cable printer nozzle likes to make webs. \n \n After cleaning (if necessary), the USB cable can be installed. The shorter of the two male cables will be cut and used to feed power to the brushless fan. The longer lead will plug into the VR headset.\n \n Push the coil over the center post after soldering to the red/black leads of the usb cable. I've glued my coil to prevent any movement. Press the brass sleeve bearing through the center. This will also lock the coil by expanding the center post on the 3D print.\n \n Install the fan over the coil, and replace the plastic lock ring to secure the fan. A pen cap works well here.\n \n Done! Check to see if the fan rubs against any part of the cover. Adjusting the position of the brass sleeve bearing will solve this.\nHow I Designed This\nThe design is pretty minimal: add fan to cover. \nThe longest time invested was in translating the stock cover's points to engage the VR headset. After that, it was designing around what I had on hand. \nThe fan I had didn't have any housing, so I designed it into the cover, giving it a more finished look. \n\n \n \n Overview\n\n This cover uses the same attachment points as the stock cover. It may be necessary to cut off any blobs, unless of course your printer doesn't leak like mine.\n USE\n To use, install the fan cover to the same slots as the stock cover. Plug your wall charger to the fan cover, and the remaining male usb cable from the cover goes to the VR headset to charge the phone while in use.\nProject: Samsung Gear VR Fan Cover\nProject Name:\n Samsung Gear VR Fan Cover\n Overview & Background:\n This project has it all: 3D printing, recycling (if re-purposing a scrap 80mm fan), product improvement, soldering, assembly, and it's 'cool.' (It moves air onto your phone to dissipate heat... get it? Ayyy!)\n Objectives:\n Product improvement: Not every off-the-shelf product is complete. Everything can be improved or updated.\nPrinting orientation: printing with the flat-side down minimizes filament waste by reducing support material\nRe-purposing e-waste: I re-used an otherwise un-useful computer fan with no housing\nRe-purposing off the shelf parts: The USB splitter, while originally created to charge a bluetooth headset and cell phone, works great for this application and no new wire harness had to be created\nSoldering: The short USB male lead will need to be soldered to the fan coil pcb for power\nProblem Solving: How to solve a problem where phone is over-heating due to normal use \n Audiences:\n Anyone who uses or is capable of using a Gear VR cover, those learning product development\n Subjects:\n Engineering, Technology\n Skills Learned (Standards):\n 3D printing, Reverse engineering, soldering\n Lesson/Activity:\n Print STL\nAssemble from parts, either purchased online or around the junk drawer\n Duration:\n Begin with a lesson in product development, prototyping, etc.\nPrint STL (22hrs)\nAssemble (5hrs)\nEnjoy (Lifetime)\n Preparation:\n Basic understanding of any of the following:\n3D printing\nRecognizing why products are created\nSoldering (safety)\nProduct assemblies \n Rubric & Assessment:\n Should design a product that effectively removes heat from back of phone.\nCould include change in temp after use compared to set benchmark without fan cover.\n Handouts & Assets:\n Nothing.
