Samson Keystone - Cadouin Cloister

Many stunning sculptures can be found in the cloister of Cadouin Abbey in Dordogne. One truly exceptional piece is a Keystone depicting Samson, a legendary biblical hero known for his remarkable physical power, which resided in his lengthy locks. His wife Delilah eventually uncovered this secret and instructed her servant to secretly cut off Samson's hair while he slept, thereby rendering him powerless. Picture this impressive keystone standing at an astonishing 3.5 meters tall, prominently situated at the center of a majestic three-arched vault amidst numerous intricately carved biblical scenes. It is truly breathtaking. I had to ascend a lengthy ladder to capture this remarkable scene, and fortunately, it was just long enough for me to secure this extraordinary shot.
