Introduction

I have always found the topographical 3d map prints really cool, but as a relatively practical person never found a reason to print them out myself.

I have been also on a lookout for a filament sample that I would like (at the moment I'm just leaving the last bit of a roll as sample with a tag.

Combining the two last paragraphs I reached this design, the “Samplake”.

These Samplakes have different thickness areas to assess the transparency and are thin enough to get a feel of the stiffness of the material thanks to the natural landscape of lakes around the world.

I also made a storage box for them, that also uses very little filament but holds them so one can assess the color at a glance and take the matching ones out easily for further inspection.

Print guide

The included Gcodes (for MK3S) work well and have the “Samplake” name and a key chain hole.

The included 3MF files can be configured. Key chain hole and the Samplake label can be removed or repositioned as needed.

The included files work for 0,2 mm layer height or 0.1 mm layer height, some lakes come out better in one some in the other.

The included boxes need to be printed in spiral vase mode 0.4mm nozzle 0.3 mm layer height and 2 bottom layers. Deviation from that brings issues with fitment of the samples in the boxes.

Currently included bodies of water:

Baikal

Black Sea

Dead Sea

Great Bear Lake

Lake Michigan

Loch Ness

Currently included extras:

“Samplake” text STL for remixing/adding lakes to collection

Box for 9 Samplake samples

Box for 24 Samplake samples

Design method

The frame and key chain hole are simple PrusaSlicer objects. The Samplake name, is a separate STL used as negative volume.

The actual map is generated using online tool https://touchterrain.geol.iastate.edu/

One sample settings the size for the swatches is 51 x 31 x 2,4 mm but the map generator output is not always as it shows so that needs some trial and error. I also cut away from the bottom of the map file so the body of water area will be 1 layer thick

Final notes

If there is a demand for some specific lake I could make it and add it here but anyone can make their own remix of their favorite lake and link it to this model as a remix so I (and anyone else) can find them in one place :D
